Melissa Jordan – Duplicitous /melissa-jordan-duplicitous/ Thu, 24 Nov 2011 20:47:47 +0000 http://www.uncannyeditions.com/?p=742

This publication aims to expose Melissa Jordan’s collages as a central part of her practice.

Duplicitous, by Melissa Jordan
Initially cinematic moments, these images are reformed. It is always a moment, unexpected, never a planned portrait. The captured image, akin to the original film stills, suggest a narrative but offers no certainties.
Although frozen, the figures appear to be shape-shifting, playing with friction. Their inability to fully reveal themselves reflects on the duplicitous nature of their narratives.
Often exhibited at a larger than human scale, in this publication, these prints are now returned to their original format.

Karen Lacroix of Uncanny Editions hosted a workshop at X Marks the Bökship exploring the illustration/ design process archived in Uncanny Magazine 3.

The workshop was a platform for experimenting with the medium of publication, reproduction and manipulation as a form of enriching and challenging the illustration process. Inviting illustrators, designers and artists with work in progress, the goal was to positively interfere with the work being produced, while generating a forum for discussion through the act of publishing.

Uncanny Magazine no. 3 /uncanny-magazine-no-3/ Tue, 23 Aug 2011 08:00:22 +0000 http://www.uncannyeditions.com/?p=587

The aim of this issue is to document and archive an essentially visual account of ‘publication as process’. The idea of making several publications during the illustration/ design process is a way of creating a platform for critical awareness. Not only does it generate space for discussion with other people, but promotes a big variety of solutions and alternatives to the work being produced, thus increasing the possibility of making a more considered and reflected decision through the act of publishing.

Issue 3 of Uncanny Magazine is divided into two sections: 1) a reproduction of a publication produced as part of the image-making process for an illustration project for the English Touring Opera, in its original size and form; 2) a selection of 11 of the 23 publications produced whilst making illustrations for the aforementioned design project.

Dimensions: 29.7 x 21 cm, 52pp.

Publication as Process 2 /publication-as-process-2/ Sat, 23 Apr 2011 17:26:31 +0000 http://www.uncannyeditions.com/?p=453

The making of publications and the exploration of different printing processes are used in order to inform the process of designing an illustration.

Publication forces a confrontation of the imagery collected during the research process and can have an important impact during the process of ‘illustrating’. Control is often lost while using different printing methods (offset, digital, photocopy). By using, obliterating and composing different paper sizes and paper stocks, the images collected for an ongoing illustration commission, reveal new contexts and relations, creating space for an enriched design process.

A selection of spreads shown here will also be published in issue 3 of Uncanny Magazine.
